In 2015, I fulfilled a dream by launching an award dedicated to honoring Afghan women entrepreneurs. I named it after Khadijah, the wife of Prophet Muhammad, who was herself a trader. My goal was to remind Afghan traditional and religious communities that women have a long history of trade—nearly 1400 years ago—and to challenge the notion that women today cannot participate fully in commerce with all the modern opportunities available.
